Focusing on a personal pursuit comes first - going to college, having a career, and reaching a position of power. I do not think that there really is a day when you will announce to the world that you are going to advance the common good. However, you can help people here and there, donate a little bit of time, donate some money, but in the end if you get to a the position of power and have money, then you could truly advance the common good.
